Introduction to Propeller Balancing

Two and a half years ago, our organization initiated the production of the Balanset-1 device, specifically designed for balancing rotary mechanisms in various applications, including aircraft propellers. As the demand for balancing aircraft propellers increased from both organizations and individuals, we began to direct our attention towards this area.

The Balanset-1 has been effectively deployed in settings far removed from traditional workshops, including field conditions where flexibility and adaptability are critical. This portable balancer allows for dynamic balancing of propellers, effectively reducing vibrations that can lead to wear and tear on the aircraft components or discomfort to the crew and passengers.

Methodology for Balancing Aircraft Propellers

The propeller balancing process using the Balanset-1 involves several steps. Initially, vibration sensors, including accelerometers and phase angle sensors, are installed on the engine gearbox. These sensors record the vibrations and the phase of the propeller rotation, transmitting this data to a computer for analysis. Based on the recorded vibrations before and after adjustments, the system calculates the necessary correction weights and their installation angle to compensate for any identified imbalances.

Yak-52 Aircraft
In a significant instance, fieldwork was conducted on the Yak-52 aircraft equipped with an M-14P engine and a two-blade propeller. Su-29 Aircraft
Another critical application involved the MTV-9-K-C/CL 260-27 propeller on the Su-29 aircraft. This propeller also underwent balancing at a frequency of 1350 rpm, which achieved a significant decrease in vibration levels from 6.7 mm/sec to 1.5 mm/sec following the introduction of corrective weights. The insights gained from this process also revealed discrepancies in the factory balancing"s effectiveness, highlighting the need for careful evaluation of manufacturing tolerances and assembly procedures.

Regular propeller balancing is essential not just for the efficiency of the motor but also for safety. Imbalanced propellers can lead to numerous issues, including increased wear on engine components, vibration-related fatigue, and potentially catastrophic failures during flight. Furthermore, reducing such vibrations contributes to a more comfortable flight experience, reducing wear on sensitive equipment and keeping crews and passengers safe from the adverse effects of noise and vibration.
